Trains, tunnels, camping, a big lake, river trails, mountain biking, secret passages..., what more could an adventurer ask for. We take the train from Wellington to Featherston. The train goes through the second longest tunnel in New Zealand, the Rimutaka tunnel, at 8.8 km. From Featherston there is a cycle south on the Western side of the deep, pristine, gorgeous, turquoise, glacier-fed Lake Wairarapa, ಠ_ಠ.

We then head to cross creek where we camp overnight. The next morning it is an uphill cycle to the Summit going through several small as well as a long tunnel. From there it is mostly downhill all the way to Upper Hutt. We then follow the Hutt river trail to Petone, travel along the foreshore and take the cycle track back to Wellington. Most of the travel is off road except for 11 km from Featherston to Cross Creek,  seven kilometers, between the end of the Rimutaka rail trail and the Hutt River in Upper Hutt, and a few hundred metres after the Petone on-ramp.

How to get there. Take the 6:22 pm Wairarapa train from Wellington to Featherston. (Not sure how many bicycles can be bought onto the train, so numbers on this trip will be limited until I can obtain further information). Fare is $13.50. Cycle the Western Lake Rd. to the turn off to Cross Creek. We will camp at Cross Creek, which has a basic campsite with a pit toilet. There are flush toilets at the Summit.

Difficulty. 3.5/5.0. You need to be reasonably fit for cycling. There is a steep uphill section to start the cycle on Saturday, followed by 40 km cycle downhill and on the flat to get to Petone. If there is Norwesterly then the wind will be mostly behind us.

What to bring. Tent or share, food for Friday night. Food for breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Water for the stay at Cross Creek. Sleeping bag, warm clothing, wet weather gear, although if the weather looks bad the trip will be postponed. Cycle lights, forward and rear. Toilet paper.

Time. Not sure possibly 5 to 7 hours on Saturday depending on the wind.

Hopefully the train will be reliable this time. Does any of you guys have some space in the car for me and my bike? From Wellington City, that would be much appreciated and I can pay a share in the gas as well. Cheers,

@ Mena, I am guessing this trip will be altered/postponed if we cannot get on the train with bikes? As any cars will be stranded in Featherston.

It's just that I was hoping to go for the big ride tomorrow but with buses replacing trains I lost all my chances at the last minute, and it sucks.

so what happens to the tent and sleeping bags when we're cycling back, it'd be a big load of weight to carry all this stuff on our backs. Will there be a car or something picking them up from featherston to Welly???

Ok, I have a big camping tent, which is comfy when using, but very heavy when carrying. Anybody wanna host me for a night in tent??

I am in for 1-day too. We can do more biking and less hauling of gear.

I prefer the original plan because of the camping experience and less rush. I have. Have 2b home by 6pm on Sat.

Guys it certainly possible that we can organise a one day ride for Saturday, but it may be a bit late to get the numbers now, so could include it as future event.

Not sure I will be able to do it overnight Friday at this stage due to work commitments on the Friday. May also be logistically a bit tough as don't really want to be cycling with a full backpack - don't have panniers.

I actually think the one day trip is a good idea, but otherwise, I will help whoever is willing to share a tent with me carrying the tent half the way.

:) I want to camp and I love to cycle, but carrying two meals, a tent, sleeping bag, snacks and water is just too much

No need to buy a bike adam. Just hire one. That's my plan and they give you a helmet and lock too (obviously depending on where you hire from).

Thanks Claire I didn't consider hiring a bike for some reason. Which place are you hiring your bike from? I really fancy doing this, I think it could be a blast but I am not sure if my fitness level is high enough, so I need to give this some thought. Don't want to be left behind while everyone else zooms off in to the sunset (It's the uphill bit I'm not sure about as I've not ridden up a long hill before).

It all sounds very exciting, I'm looking forward to doing it, now does anybody got a 1.8 m X 0.5 meter space in their tent to spare? :)

Hi guys, I'm going to have to leave this. I can't quite get my head round the logistics getting the bike hired after work on Friday, get to the station in time for the train and carrying a tent etc (hire bikes don't seem to have racks) so as much as it sounds like a lot of fun, I think it's a bit hard for me to be able to do this. I'm sure you'll have a blast though!

Although it is still a bit uncertain at the moment the weather on Saturday is not looking good, with wet cold gale force southerlies predicted. If we had strong northerlies that would be great. I will make a decision on whether to cancel on Friday morning.

I'd be surprised if this goes ahead to be honest due to the weather - [secretly pleased as it will mean I can attend the re-scheduled one! :P]

No choice really! I am still keen for the original trip and also a day version of the Hutt River only, or the Rimutaka incline only.
