Makara Beach (map)
High cliffs, spectacular views, a rugged coastline, a historic pa site, concrete bunkers are all part of the Makara track experience. Makara Track climbs past an ancient maori pa site and the remains of World War II gun emplacements. It then drops down to the rocky coast, where it is possible to have a refreshing swim in the sea. Bring a mask and snorkel if you would like to explore the sea and rocky pools along the coast.
We will meet at the carpark at the end of the Makara beach road at 11am and walk the trek from there.
How to get there. Makara Track begins and ends at Makara Beach, 16 km north of Wellington at the end of Makara Road which runs from the south end of Karori Road.
Difficulty. 3.0/5.0. There is a steep section to start with for the first half an hour before we hit the ridge and the gun emplacements.
Water safety. Although the inner Wellington harbour is generally safe, the coast around the Wellington region, which includes all the south coast and some of the north coast, including Makara, can have very strong tidal rips, which can quickly pull you out to sea. Never swim at promontories, head lands, entrances to large bays, or where the water surface is disturbed, which is indicative of a rip. The area we will have lunch is generally safe from rips, but is not sheltered in a strong northwesterly wind, the prevailing wind around Wellington. If there are large waves and you are not a strong swimmer please do not enter the water, there may be a strong undertow. However, if there are little or no waves then fossicking around the rock pools can be a very pleasant activity for all.
What to bring. Warm clothing, swimwear, snorkel and mask, something for lunch, water, sturdy shoes.
Time. 3 to 5 hours, depending on how long you want to take to swim and laze on the beach. Once at the beach it is straightforward to make your own way back along the coast to the car park.

Hello, I have 4 spare seats in my car if anyone still needs a lift?
Hi Awras, a lift would be great! Happy to chip in for petrol money etc I am in the CBD, where would I be able to meet you? Thanks, Nikki
@steven - you offered me a ride for this event but now i will not be attending - thanks
@ Nikki, Matt and Mick: I can drive into the CBD, I live in Northland so if any of you leave nearby I can also come and pick you up. Whatever suits. My number is 0273036037. See you Saturday.
@ Steven, what time shall I meet you outside the front gate of the botanical gardens? Thanks, Rachel
those still getting a ride with me - I'll try to get to the Bot gardens main gate on Glenmore St by 10.20ish - my phone is 021 1644641 if you want to txt so that I can txt you back when I get there
Hi!! How are you? Does anyone have two spare seats in a car? Happy to share petrol to get there and back. Unless I dont't know how I would go to the Makara beach. Thank you.
Hi Javier
I have two spare seats in my car, but what part pf town are you coming from? I'm picking Gareth up from the main railway station at 10.20
Is anyone keen to cycle down with me? Otherwise.. does anyone have a spare seat leaving from the CBD or rail station? I'm in Hataitai and am feeling lazy about cycling up the hill to the botanical gardens! Too many hills. :)
Hi Sue,
OK. I will be at the main railway station at 10:20 a.m. I see you over there. Than you very much.
does anyone have spare in there car for me, from town. my ride has pulled out
Hi there Rebecca, yes I can give you a ride. I can pick you up from botanic gardens at 10.20? Number is 021 102 8550.
I am still planning to pick up Michael (host) at the Botanical Gardens Glenmore St entrance at 10.25am sharp. Still have space for two others. Gold coin petrol donations still welcome. MY only concern is that if it is cold, I may come back as early as possible. I seem to have a cough that hangs around forever. Can't stay home any more(!) but don't want to hang around on a windy coast if cold. But I guess we won't be swimming and hanging around in those conditions anyway!
thanks emily, what entrance to the botanic gardens should i meet you
@Steven - since plans have changed for the Saturday, I will not attend this event and won't need a ride therefore. Thanks, anyway for your offer and see you around sometimes again. Maybe at the quiz? Cheers!
does anyone know if i can bring my dog on this walk? no probs if not. He is very well behaved.
thanks Michael...it will just be me then! :-)
Rebecca - I can pick you at 10.20 from the Tinakori road entrance by the main gates to the gardens. Will see you then!
@Mick, Nikki and Matt. I'll be leaving Northland around 10 on saturday morning, happy to pick you guys up anywhere, just text/message and let me know where suits. See you Saturday
@Snaiet - I would appreciate a ride from the botanical garden gates too. Thank you.
@Snaiet - Just wanted to confirm you are picking me up as well right ?
I'm down to only one passenger now, so could take one or two more from bot gardens on Glenmore - anyone interested, let me know.
The weather is looking great for Saturday. The marine forecast is fine with northerly 15 knots developing. The swell forecast is northwest half a metre developing on Saturday.
Since it has been relatively calm over the last few days, this should mean clear water for snorkelling.
My car now full with KK, ErIch, Michael H. Dark green ford laser with white star dangly thing in front window, 10.25am.
Im coming in from the kapiti coast does any one still want a ride - I coud pick up people on my way through
@Mary-Ann I'm coming from P'ram, so could get a ride from you or vice-versa, so long as we still picked up @Rachel at the bot gardens.
Sounds great I dont mind either way - let me know what you want and we can organise to meet up
@Mary-Ann if you're going past the P'ram railway station (highway-side) you could pick me up there, or if you're starting further south I could drive to you.
ok Steve I can pick up from railway station. What time should we leave 9.30?? and do you have the directions - I have never been to Makara
M-A - if you get to the P'ram station around 9.30 that should be comfortable. I've not been to Makara before either, but it looks like you just go through Karori and keep on going.
I've got google maps on my phone.
Get just passed Karori park and turn right. should be signposted.
My car was overheating, is there any lift that I can get from the wellington train station
ok Steve Im coming from Pram beach so I will be at railway stn at 9.30 see you then
Kitty we could prob pick you up as well
M-A if you're coming up Kapiti Rd, I'll just go over the road and stand by the Thrive Chiropractic sign (corner of Warrimoo). We can go off along the quays to pick Kitty up from Wgtn station, then up Bowen to pick up Rachel (unless the station would be better for Rachel?)
@Kitty I can pick you up 10:20 from in front of the Railway station if you like. Please let me know.
Update for sea conditions is moderate to rough with a 0.5 meter swell in the afternoon, however low tide is at 1 pm which makes it ideal for swimming/snorkelling.
Thanks Keith, that will be great, will be there at 10.20am front of railway station, I will be coming from the hutt. Cheers.0212515827
Steve - looks like Kitty is getting a ride with Keith. Rachel we can pick you up from where ever you like railway station or botanical gardens just let me know 0276 348875. Still have spare seat if anyone else needs lift
Hi Mary-Ann, will meet you outside the Railway Station. Thanks Rachel 027 6450463
@Sue. I forgot about walking to the pa site. When we first overlooked the sea after going uphill, then the pa site was on the peninsula to the north. Roy and some others walked up that way.
Hi Sue, could I also have a lift if there's still room? Thanks.
