The First Annual Pedal Boat Race!

The Rowing Lagoon (map)

Selected By: Linc

Seven dollars. Seventeen boats. Three winners.

In an effort to raise awareness of pedal power as an environmentally friendly way to get around Wellington, we're staging the First Annual Pedal Boat Race. The race will be officially started by the Mayor of Wellington, Celia Wade-Brown!

Boats will enter the lagoon and position themselves for 10 minutes for the starting line at the bridge separating the lagoon with the sea. When the signal is given by the Mayor, boats will race to the Marina where shall be tied 17 ribbons which need to be collected by each team and back to the start line for victory, prizes and respect of your fellow adventurers.

Remember, it's not about speed...it's all about style! Dress appropriately!

Difficulty: 2/5

Length: approx an hour for the race plus preparation and celebration time at Mac’s Brewery

When: Arrive BEFORE 10am in order to get into your boat on time!

Where: Pedal Boat hiring place at the lagoon at the back of the Boatshed and Wharewaka (http://whatnz.co.nz/)

What to bring: sunscreen, hat, synthetic clothes and no denim or cotton as hard to get dry.

Cost: $7 per person incl pedal boat to be shared by three people and life jacket

Thanks to Letizia for suggesting!

Totally! Awesome idea! Might need to check if there's any speed restrictions on the water. I reckon the top speed on those boats could be quite impressive :-)

Count me in, depending on the date, lunchtime would be awesome, esp. on dress down Friday, although can always come in tie and suit if need be :-) Not this Friday though, its meant to be a washout, and am on leave

Hi Rini, yep best way to do it is to pay the boat owner directly and cannot take the credit Roy all Letizia's idea.

Eugene, is 11am a bit early for drinks? Maybe we can have a coffee. Or we can decide at the time.

Good point Letizia, although, for some, that might be normal :-) maybe deciding at the time is best, forgot its a 10am start, some might be suffering from sea-sickness as well

Jo, in case you were really worried about the speed restrictions, boats are not allowed to exceed 5 knots but these boats could never get close to that speed :)

@Letizia - more excited than worried. I reckon if we can get them to 7 knots we could get some air :-)

Congratulations Geoff. If you won the race it was only because I got out of your way and made it possible for you otherwise you would have come second. :-) Enjoy the glory my friend. Well deserved.
