12-19 September will be Conservation Week. Last year one of the events was penguin spotting + free sausage sizzle at night time with DOC rangers. It was booked out so we couldn't take part. I am not sure if they are doing it again this year, at the moment they have very few events listed for Wellington. But I was thinking we could do it anyway, I know there is a penguin sanctuary at Tarakena Bay (close to the airport) looked after by forest and bird.org. Maybe I could approach them and ask some advice. This event could be done together with the bonfire evening...I hope it doesn't sound a too silly idea.

Love the funny little critters - saw one at Evans Bay / Airport, and one at the waterfront by Frank Kitts Park (!) so far, purely by chance. Good idea to get some tips from the pros!

Quick update on this: I heard back from the coordinator of Places for Penguins in Wellington. He'll talk to his colleagues and see what he can arrange for us.
