There are a number of easy short walks around the forks.
The Arcus Loop commemorates the Arcus family who farmed the Otaki Forks locality from the 1930's. The walk begins on Boielle Flat and crosses the Waiotauru River footbridge, then works its way across the river terraces and gullies as it climbs to join the Field Track, taking 50 min return. There are good views of the campground and river.
The Fenceline Loop is a 1.5 - 2 hr return trip that passes through regenerating forest above the campground and gives some good views of the Waiotauru Valley.
The Waiotauru Walk is an easy 40 min return walk from the Waiotauru carpark up-valley to the site and relics of Seed and O'Brien's sawmill.
There are also a number of short tracks that descend from Otaki Gorge Road into the gorge, giving access for picnicking, swimming, fishing and watersports:
Getting there
Otaki Forks is 19 km inland from Otaki township - approx. 1½ hr drive from Wellington or Palmerston North. The easiest turn-off from State Highway 1 is at Otaki Gorge Road, just south of the State Highway 1 bridge over the Otaki River. The last 5 km of the Otaki Gorge Road is unsealed, narrow and windy - please drive carefully.
Please leave a message if you can offer a lift there, or need a lift!
I will drive so can offer 3 spots in my car. Will ask for a small koha for petrol, but won't be too much!
Sounds really great! But need a lift though. Anna or Matt, do you still have 2 spots available in your car? @Tim, let me know if I can help with something.
Hi Roy- I live in Mt Vic and can pick up from around there, city or on the way if this suits you.
oh hell, I am organising eh, well Matt H or Anna, anymore spaces floating around in cars?
i could do with a ride too. from wellington. this will b fun :o)
Well, its still a month to go where a lot of things can happen...but does anyone have a small spare seat for me , please? Would be really great, actually :)
Hey guys.....I'm taking my car....live in J'ville but can swing into a central spot in the city to pick you up...maybe the train station? Let me know :)
Robyn, Letizia, Joe or anyone else needing a ride--I can fit 3 riders in my car, so if you'd like to ride with me, please let me know via this forum, email or phone (0211774677) cheers... M
thanks matt h for the offer of a ride - yes that will be great.
also thanks to virginia for the offer but out of your way.
I will take Matt's offer, thank you Virginia. Thank you Matt too.
Hi Matt, thanks for your offer, appreciate and will take it! Lets get back on this to decide where and when to catch up, when its getting closer to the date. Right?
Hi All: I finally made it to the Yes list! I potentially have 4 spaces in my car but will decide more close to the date if I will be taking my car or hitching a ride.
Hi Raj! If you decide to take your car I need a space. Seems like lifts are always in demand. Sharing petrol costs should be made compulsory!
Hi Dolly, You will have your space. Since Otaki is 75 Kms, I will be asking for $15/person to cover the cost of fuel. The money gets the passenger to and from the destination, reasonable pick ups within city or on the way, music and awesome conversations!! :-)..
Update: 3 spaces left in my car @ $15/person
Hey guys, I'll drive into town and grab some people seeing as there is a demand for seats....no skin off my nose :) Just lemme know.....Beth, Sam.....
Sorry I haven't been following the posts closely enough.. I'll be driving from Island Bay so happy to help out with lifts also =)
Hey Mark, if Janneke has given you a lift all good, otherwise let me know
oh wait...am in Northland temporarily...which direction are you coming from Raj?
@Beth: I am comming from Wellington City, but can swing by ur area if u want.
Lol, this is getting too confusing.....if people are heading out my way (up the gorge....can I grab a lift instead? lol Can race down to the J'ville shops.....
@Raj, yes please to lift...(if you still have room)...I'm on Pembroke Rd, Northland. Sorry for late reply I was waiting to find out for sure if I had time off work!
@ Beth: Please please txt me ur cell no: on 021-2335331. Cheers
P.S: There is a cost of $10 to cover the fuel. Let me know if ur still keen.
@Dolly: Ignore my earlier fuel cost of $15. $10 would be plenty.
I've just grabbed a spot on this walk. I've a station wagon and can take 4 others, or if not, then I'd like to grab a spot in someone else's car. Any takers for a lift out there?
Virgina, I haven't been keeping up with these posts and am now not sure if you can still offer me a lift. Please let me know either way. Cheers.
Bad news, folks. I've come down with the flu and won't be able to go to the hike. I had offered rides to Robyn, Letizia and Joe--they need rides now! Hopefully someone had room (Paul Wilson?)
Hi - I would like to get a lift from someone. Joe is in Germany and will not be back in time for this meetup.

@Raj: any chance of a lift? I can wait at Mana railway station right next to the paremata roundabout. I had offered others lifts but no one has got back to me
Hi Margaret, Yes, I can give you a lift. Its $10 to cover fuel charge. Txt me on 021-2335331 if you are interested.
@Raj see you tomorrow as discussed at mana railway stn carpark about 9 am
Think its too short notice Mark, with organizing rides etc. Looks like morning rain then sunny breaks, so should be ok when we start. Its adventure Wellington so we can handle a little water.
Saturday works best me thinks.
