**Unfortunately todays event is cancelled due to high winds**
Now that the weather's getting warmer and the sunlight's lingering longer, it's the perfect time to explore Wellington by kayak at sunset. Sound good? Join the inaugural Thursday night jaunt around our sparkling harbour. Afterwards, we can continue the conversation and fun over food and drinks on the waterfront.
We'll meet at Ferg's Kayaks at 5.15pm for a 5.30 launch and have the kayaks back by 7pm. Please be there on time to get gear and your kayak fitted.
** This tour is weather dependent. I will post here on the day if it's cancelled. **
The cost is $24.00 which includes 1.5 hours on the water with a sea kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid and spray skirt. Also, we will be accompanied by a Ferg's instructor so we can improve our skills along the way and navigate gracefully through any challenges, returning intact as a group.
- Experience Level: Easy/Intermediate. You have paddled in a sea kayak before, but no rolling required. Wellington harbour offers a dynamic paddling environment with tides, currents, wind and commercial traffic, so it's better to take a class first if you're an absolute beginner.
- Wear appropriate clothing: no denim and no t-shirts. Cotton is not your friend in a kayak — it does not dry well and dissipates heat quickly. The water temps are much cooler than the air temperatures. Wool or synthetics are the way to go. If you have a wetsuit (farmer jane/farmer john), that would be ideal. Neoprene paddling shoes or dive booties are great too. While unlikely, it's possible to end up immersed, so dress accordingly.

Fantastic idea!! ive always wanted to do this with a group. Cool Emily!
Great idea, I'm keen.
I was just about to suggest a kayaking outing, looks like someone beat me to it :)
oh boo.. I am a bit scared now. Gonna try and get rid of my cold first :D
The weather forecast for tomorrow isn't looking great. Is this meetup still planned to go ahead?
Thanks for your question! Meetup is for next Thursday, Oct 28th, so it all depends on the weather then. Ferg's told me to contact on the day and see if it is a go or not — I'll let them make the call and post here. Looks like they've got a twitter acct to watch too: http://twitter.com/fergsweather![]()
Also, I set this up as weekly but would welcome others to host different weeks as will likely not be able to do every Thurs through summer. Anyone interested, let me know.
Hello Kayakers!
Just spoke with Ferg's and they said no go for this evening.
Although the sun's out now, the wind is at 15 knots (their cut off) and rising, expecting more cold wind and white caps than is suitable for paddling at our departure time.
So.... still looking forward to the inaugural sunset kayak meetup, as soon as Nov 11th if the weather agrees with us! (Alas, also have to cancel the 4th due to Ferg's scheduling conflict.)
Thanks,
Emily
