A day trip to Matiu/Somes Island in the middle of Wellington Harbour.
We will take the 10 am Dominion Post Ferry (~$22 return) from Queens Wharf for a scenic ride to the island, then walk around its footpaths with the chance to see tuatara, kerikeri and other rare native wildlife.
Scenic views of the harbour, an old lighthouse, historic gun emplacements, and a "self-guided tour" through the old quarantine station will keep us "entertained" for a few hours.
Bring a picnic and your camera!
Depending on weather and how everyone feels, return times back to Queens Wharf can be 1:40, 3:10, or 4:25. There are ferry return options to Petone, Seatoun, or Days Bay.
See http://www.eastbywest... for details on the ferry schedule.

Sure, this would be a great trip for kids, the walks aren't strenuous, and there's enough to see to keep them busy. :-)

I'd love this, have been a couple of times, once with a volunteer group from work 2 1/2 years ago where we got to tour the quarantine station - it wasn't open to the public then. I got to hold a Giant Cook Strait Weta (well, it crawled quite quickly up my arm!). Would bringing children be OK?
