Matiu/Somes Island - overnight trip

Queens Wharf (map)

Selected By: Jan Damm

Experience a night on Matiu/Somes Island. See the sun set and rise again from the middle of Wellington harbour, and great night views of the city.

We will take the Dominion Post ferry out on Saturday at 2:30, then set about exploring the island. Highlights include a loop walk around the island, WWII gun emplacements, the old quarantine station, and the chance to see Tuatara, Kakariki, and native Skinks.
I have booked the Forest & Bird House for the night, and plan to rise early to see the dawn. Definitely bring your camera! :-)
Sunday we can spend as much or little time on the island as we like, with ferries leaving between 10:40 and 4:25.

The house only sleeps 8 (and the other house is already booked), so this is a hard limit for the trip (unless you want to book a campsite - if so, do it soon).
The house has a kitchen and 3 bunk rooms - byo sleeping bag and pillow cover. Power is provided by generator at set intervals, so bring a torch.
Dinner and breakfast are also byo - unless we have a volunteer for organising communal meals?

Cost for this meetup per person will be $20 for accomodation plus the ferry trip (probably $22 after the GST increase).
There isn't much of a chance for a refund if we cancel (or have drop-outs), so by RSVP'ing "Yes", you agree to pay for accomodation UNLESS you change it to "No" AND someone subsequently takes your place (e.g. via the waiting list). Sorry, but I had to advance the money and wouldn't want to be stuck with that.

I've set the meeting time to 2:00 - sometimes the 2:30 ferry can get cancelled, in that case we could take the 2:15 one. If you're late and miss both, you can catch the 3:45 ferry.

Over the next days I'll also be scheduling a day trip to Matiu Island - please only RSVP for one of the two. :-)

shame that there are so few beds available, we could probably fill them 5 times over! this would be a great one to do again during summer

We'll definitely have to organize this one again, I'd love to do it. Maybe we can camp there when it heats up a bit...

Jacqi suggested doing a potluck thing for dinner - what do you think?

Potluck sounds good to me....will think of something we usually prepare for the All Souls Day back home (in the Philippines, for those who do not know me). Jan, don't forget to bring your very nice and bright head torch....PLEASE....LOL!!!

I'm planning to do a veggie quiche and maybe white chocolate and raspberry muffins. Does anyone have any allergies or similar?

My 40th birthday is 2 days later...as I'm new to Welly, too new to host a party, would quite like to celebrate on this weekend! I'll see if I can get baking in terms of a cake or something :)

I'm still keen to go, and happy to go for pot luck - just don't expect anything elaborate from me!

Are there any requests for refreshment? By default I'll get some soft drinks (e.g. Sprite), some beer (e.g. Export Gold) and some modest red and white wine. I can adapt quantities accordingly ...

Rik, I'll be bringing some ale, as I'm a bit fussy, and probably a drop of red too.

I'm not a good cook, but I know where to find good food here in Strathmore, and I'll bring some of that. :-)

okay - Steve - doesn't have to be elaborate, or even home-made, Just something to share.

No allergies here Jacqi, and yes, I'll bring something for breakfast, too - I get grumpy without breakfast, and that would be a shame ;-)

cool, so that's three of us bringing food and one bringing cake :-) Rik - are you planning to bring some as well? maybe some cheese and crackers or pate or similar?
Megan, Sachi and Ken - are you doing your own thing?

I'll defend Rik here (if that's necessary ;-) ) and say bringing drinks to share is already a fair bit, and heavy, too. I'm happy to bring a bit more food, kinda happens that way with potluck anyway, that people each bring more than one person can eat :-)

Just got an email from DOC, saying "the oven in the house is currently under repair, however the hobs on top work fine" - so don't rely on heating things up in an oven for dinner. Things that can be heated in a pot or eaten cold will be the way to go.

Just got a note from the ferry people, there's a risk that the 2:30 ferry may not go, instead the 2:15 one would go direct to the island. So make sure you're there well before that (the meetup time was set to 2:00 for precisely that reason). Cheers

No allergies here, I will def bring something lucky to contribute to the pot, but not sure what yet. Rik, are you really bringing all those drinks? Maybe each of us should leave some room in our packs to help out. Or am I wrong to expect this is a trip where we hike in? Also, what about cookstuff/cutlery etc. - is that all there?

So yes, Ken, as you'll have read - it's a hike in... but it'll probably take us longer to carry our backpacks from the parking lot / bus to Queens Wharf than from the wharf to the house on the island ;-)

Alas, sunrise was another non-event (I'll upload the pictures to Flickr shortly) and sorry to have to leave early on Sunday: pressure of catching up with house/garden maintenance is really getting me down and will keep me in for November, so this was a nice outing before the chore-chocked dull month ahead!

Thanks all for coming along and making this a fun trip, especially Kara and Ken for filling two spots at late notice - and thanks Fiona and Ken for finding the penguins :-)

So much to look at on such a small island! Thanks to Jan for all the work in setting this up. Great company, great views, great wildlife, great artefacts, great food, great drink, great wigs. Just great.

Little blue penguins, skinks, a weta motel, animal quarantine warehouse, LOADS of good food/talk and my stale birthday cake! And not forgetting the wigs!
