Bush, Rivers, Mountains! Orongorongo Tracks, Catchpool Valley

Sunday 12th Septenber. 9.30 am start,
Day walk- between 5-6 hours return.
Medium grade fitness
Acess: From Wellington drive to Wainuiomata, head south along the coast road. After about 10km a signpost indicates the turnoff to Catchpool valley. There are toilets and information panels at the Catchpool carpark. The journey takes around 45 minutes. Car pooling is probably the best option to get there.
Highlights: The Rimutaka range is where the North Island's mountainous spine bows into the sea. Draining this range is the Orongorongo river. Access to the valley is one of the country's most popular walks- the Orongorongo track. It's most appealing quality is the diverse types of forest (from milled pine to native forest) through which it weaves.The plan is to walk up the Orongorongo track to Turere bridge and back to Catchpool carpark via the Cattle ridge and the Butcher track.
Another highlight is finding a lunch spot along the riverbank with the opportuntity for swimming in the rockpools below Turere bridge.
Some people may not want to walk the full circuit. There is an option available
to return to the carpark along the Orongrongo track. This option is open to those of all abilities and for those wanting their first taste os the back country.
The walk is definitely weather dependant, a good day is needed so we'll have updates on this close to the time. Fingers crossed!

Just checked the weather forecast and it's looking good for Sunday. Possibility of early rain so be prepared with a waterproof jacket and some warm clothes as we all know how changeable the weather is here! Hope everyone is sorted for lifts too! Now's the time to shout out if not.
