Pencarrow Lighthouse and Lake(s) (walk or cycle from Eastbourne)

Another great walk close to Wellington! Let's hope for good weather - The coastline es very exposed to the wind, so we'll make the finall call for this dependant on the weather forecast!

Walk or cycle (or mix again) this one:

http://www.doc.govt.n...

Wellington's Pencarrow Lakes - Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera - are New Zealand's last remaining relatively unmodified wetlands.
They are located on the south eastern head of Wellington Harbour and can be reached via a two hour walk or 25 minute cycle ride along the flat coastal road from the locked Burdan's Gate at the end of Eastbourne.

The Pencarrow wetlands are home to a wealth of native plants and wildlife, including some rare and threatened species. It's the only area in the Wellington region where banded dotterel nest on the open sand. Around the Pencarrow Lakes are many secluded picnic spots and walks with awe inspiring views of Wellington's dynamic coastline, harbour, and cityscape, and out to Cook Strait and the snow-capped Kaikoura ranges.

The track:
We will start at the large car park at the end of Muritai Road, Eastbourne. Proceed through Burdans Gate and follow the gravel road along the Wellington Harbour coastline. (about 7 km)

Walkers can then take the Lighthouse Shortcut. This steep and narrow track slides diagonally across a cliff face, with the adjacent near vertical drop helping to focus the mind. About 750m before the Lower Lighthouse there's a narrow track heading up the cliff – that's it. The effort is worthwhile, as the lighthouse offers stunning views of Wellington harbour and Cook Strait.

From there we could either return the same way or take the Light house track back. This would take us along the lake and then to the south coast - heading back north to where we started. This would be the track for the cyclists anyway I guess. You might even get further along the lake :-) )

Planning
Please remember to bring your rain coat (just in case), windbreakers would be good as well. Also Enough to drink and lunch as well as some snacks :-) I suggest that walkers and cyclists meet at the lighthouse and we'll then look for a nice picknick spot at the lakeside.

Cyclists
Youl'll need to sort out transportation for your bike or send me an email to book one of the rental bikes (Max. 20 bikes will be waiting for us at the Burdans Gate shed at the start). I would need to know final number the Thursday before please.
The rental bikes will be $25 a head as a group rate, for a minimum of 5 bikes. You can pay by eftpos, cheque or cash on the day.

You can use the message board to arrange carpools and also bike transport.

I look forward to this easy walk with stunning views! It will be great to see a lot of you there!

You can hire mountain bikes from the start point at Burdens Gate. I know the guy who owns the bike hire place so I'll check out how many we can hire for that day

Hi Lucy - It's about 7km to the lighthouse (supposed to be 2-2.5 hours) so we'll be there by lunch time. if we decide to return not via the shortcut but along the south coast track it might be a bit longer. so I guess including a lunch break about 5-6 hours?!? And probably a couple of minutes for a coffee on the way back :-)

I'll be trying to figure out how to get from Central Wellington over to the start point on foot/public transport, as a new arrival in town. If anyone has any hints or wants to meet up in the Centre to travel over, drop me a note. Hints and tips for a non local welcome!

I've just heard that we can hire up to 15 bikes for this event. They are picked up and dropped off from Burdans Gate start/finish point. Closer to the event we will collect names from those who want to hire a bike for the day. Cost is likely to be $20ish

Well one needs to keep ones fluids up after such a venture, does not one? It would be plain dangerous not to imbibe afterwards.

For those thinking of cycling, I have been around the lakes before and it is an awe inspiring experience. There are a few steep points where you have to get off and push so you should have a moderate to good level of fitness to tackle the full lakes circuit. If you want you can do a fairly easy cycle to the lighthouse and then just around the western edge of Lake Kohangapirpiri - about a 2 hour cycle plus stops. :)

Hey Katy. Your pineapple lumps very tempting but unfortunately you're not on my route. I'm sure someone can pick you up though. If not, there is a #83 bus from Queensgate at 9:23am, get off at the last stop Eastbourne bus terminus at 9:45 and then it's only 2 mins walk to the start of the track!

Thanks Tim and Julie for your responses - I hadn't realised that the #83 takes you directly to the start of the track, so I think that's just as easy - thanks heaps for the offer though. I'll still bring the pineapple lumps!

    Hiya
Those who are catching a ride with Mark Wilson, I just got off the phone with him and he will be picking us up at the back of the Railway Station @ 9.30a.m. It is at the east of the start of the
platforms. It's out the back of the station... there's a new (ish) row of glass bus shelters running at right angles to the platforms - just to the right of where cars can drive in off the waterfront road.

See you folks tomorrow and hope the weather will be looking good.

A pretty windy but awesome adventure! 8 cyclists and roughly 30 walkers made their way to the lighthouse. Exploring the trail around Kohangapiripiri on the bike was my personal highlight. Thanks everyone for showing up and facing that Wellington spring weather for a great trip and nice company!

nice group. Glad I met you all. Thank for picking a walk close to a bus stop! I think next time I'd like to bike the road section and then hike the rest... but the sheep and goats WERE cool. Wish I brought a hanglider for the top!

The day wasn't looking too hot weatherwise but that shouldn't stop you having an adventure! I was with a bunch of about 6 bikers, awesome time especially going around Lake Kohingipiripiri, up along the windy ridge, and then speeding back down to the lake edge. Must do this again on a nice day! Thanks must go to to Jaana for organising and Julie and Olivier for helping with the walkers. Great pub stop off at the end too!
